In a statement released in Abuja, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed the destruction of three transmission towers on December 28, 2023, following a similar incident the previous week. The tragic event not only resulted in the loss of the towers but also claimed the life of an NSCDC officer, marking a sorrowful day for TCN.
Mbah expressed condolences to the family of the deceased NSCDC officer, acknowledging the gravity of the incident. Additionally, counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, specializing in the Lake Chad region, provided details on the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.
Makama, in a verified post on his X handle, revealed that the NSCDC personnel, identified as Nurudeen, lost his life when he inadvertently stepped on a triggering device while inspecting the vandalized electricity tower. Makama shared a photo of Nurudeen at the scene, pointing out a tiny line across his path, suggesting it might have been the trigger for the explosives.
“The Nigerian Civil Defence personnel, Nurudeen, paid the supreme price as a result of the bomb explosion which brought down three power towers along Jakana-Auno in the early hours of today 28/12/2023,” Makama wrote. He further highlighted the small line observed in the photo, connecting to both sides of Nurudeen, speculating it as the trigger for the explosives.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by security personnel in conflict zones, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and precautionary measures in the face of terrorist activities targeting critical infrastructure.
