As we prepare to welcome the New Year, let’s acquaint ourselves with the first country to extend the greeting of ‘Happy New Year.’
Kiribati, a Pacific nation, will take the lead in heralding the arrival of 2024, even as Nigeria approaches 11 a.m. local time. Specifically, Kiritimati Island, also known as “Christmas Island” within the Republic of Kiribati, occupies the foremost time zone. Picture this: a staggering 19-hour lead over New York City.
While NYC may seem distant, Kiritimati Island is 13 hours ahead of Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT). That’s quite a substantial lead!
An hour after Kiritimati Island ushers in the New Year, Auckland, New Zealand, will commence its ‘Happy New Year’ celebrations, approximately around 12 noon Nigerian time.
The last stop on this global New Year journey is Baker Island, located 650 miles (1,046.074 kilometers) from Kiribati. The intriguing part is that despite its proximity, Baker Island lags about 26 hours behind due to the quirks of time zones.
To provide clarity, at the time of this story’s publication (10:30 a.m.), Kiritimati was merely 30 minutes away from welcoming the New Year 2024!
In the midst of these time zone marvels, it’s worth noting that over 100,000 people are anticipated to witness London’s sold-out New Year’s Eve spectacle in person.
