Ochioka, a vendor of telephone accessories hailing from Ebonyi State, was fatally shot at 23 Erhunmwunsee Street, off Ehakpen Street, Uzebu Quarters, Benin City, around 3:34 pm on December 25, 2023.
According to reports from the Nigerian Tribune, the vigilante, donned in plain clothes and armed with a single-barrel gun, responded impulsively to the woman’s cries of “thief oh! thief oh!!” by leaping over a fence and firing at Kelvin.
The victim’s acquaintance, Mr. Salas, revealed that Kelvin had a minor dispute with the woman, referred to as “Nurse,” earlier over the volume of music played from their MP3 in the compound. Hours later, following their verbal disagreement, the woman spotted Kelvin and began shouting ‘thief oh! thief oh,’ prompting the vigilante to shoot him in the stomach.
Local residents strongly condemned the killing, urging the police to ensure that justice prevails. Concerns were raised about the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Evbuotubu Police Station, questioning the decision to allow the woman, responsible for the false alarm, to roam freely after the incident.
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the tragic event, stating that the woman who raised the false alarm had been apprehended and granted bail as investigations are ongoing. Furthermore, he assured that the vigilante responsible for the shooting and his firearm are currently in police custody.
