According to a statement, the suspension is aimed at facilitating a thorough investigation into the accusations against the Provost, who is also accused of withholding documents to impede the Governing Council’s efforts.
The letter to Afolabi, dated January 3, 2024, referenced the infractions discussed during the Council’s meeting on November 21, 2023. Following a vote of no confidence, the Council decided to suspend him pending the final resolution of his case, as stipulated in Section 32.3 (a&b) of the College Edict.
The statement instructed Afolabi to relinquish all college properties in his possession to the Deputy Provost and vacate the premises immediately. Additionally, he is prohibited from entering the college or its facilities without an invitation from the Governing Council.
However, in a statement released on Tuesday, Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, announced that the Chief of Staff would lead a committee to investigate the matter. The committee, which includes the Secretary to the State Government and Commissioner for Education, aims to facilitate a crisis resolution meeting between the school management and the Governing Council.
Addressing the accusations exchanged between the Chairman of the Governing Council and the College Provost, Adeleke instructed the committee to scrutinize the controversies and ensure a harmonious resolution of the crisis.
“I have reviewed statements and allegations from Ila Orangun College of Education. I am aware of the conflict between the school management and the college Governing Council. The Committee is directed to convene a meeting of both parties, review all issues, including financial malpractices, and propose a comprehensive accountability and transparency system.
“I emphasize that anyone implicated in wrongdoing, financial mismanagement, or corruption will face severe sanctions. I declare that I will not shield anyone, regardless of their standing. The committee is expected to submit their findings and recommendations to the Governor within two weeks,” the statement concluded.
