A security analyst, Bulama Bukarti, has expressed deep concern over the escalating security challenges in Abuja, characterizing it as one of the most unsettling cities globally. Bukarti pointed out that criminals, often posing as taxi drivers, are perpetrating violent crimes at major junctions in Abuja, creating a level of fear and danger unprecedented in the city. He emphasized that Abuja’s alarming security situation is not isolated but mirrors the broader security issues prevalent across Nigeria, where over 9,700 people lost their lives in 2023 alone.
The security expert underscored the role of insecurity’s proliferation across the country in affecting Abuja, cautioning that neglecting the issue would inevitably lead to its encroachment into the capital. Intelligence reports indicated the infiltration of violent terrorist groups from various geopolitical zones, particularly the North-East, North-West, and North-Central, into Abuja. Additionally, some of these groups have extended their operations to border states like Kogi, Kaduna, Niger, and Nasarawa.
Bukarti disclosed disturbing statistics, revealing that over 200 people either lost their lives or were abducted in Abuja during the final three months of 2023. He warned that such a perilous trend could discourage investors and dissuade diplomats from residing in the nation’s capital, adversely affecting Nigeria’s global security rating.
Calling for decisive action, Bukarti urged security agencies to implement sustained security measures not only in Abuja but also across the entire country. He emphasized the importance of proactively addressing the root causes of insecurity by combating bandits and terrorists in other regions, as a means of safeguarding the capital.
The urgency of the situation was further underscored by a recent incident in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja on January 3, 2024, where six siblings and their father were abducted, adding to the growing list of security concerns in the city.
