Assisted by the human rights-focused non-profit organization, Minority Watch Nigeria, the transwoman pursued justice by filing a two-count charge of assault and theft against the alleged perpetrator. The organization recently disclosed details of the case on Instagram, revealing that an out-of-court settlement was reached on January 9, 2024. Consequently, both parties agreed to withdraw the charges.

Following this resolution, Honourable Magistrate Mrs. M.O Alao issued a stern warning to the accused, stating, “If it is something that is in your nature to do, desist. Assault is not the way. If something is not for you, step away. But it is not for you to corner somebody and do what you want to do with that person thinking the person wouldn’t have any voice. As you can see, she has a voice.”

Unofficially, the magistrate expressed concern over the perpetrator’s behavior, deeming it shameful that such criminal acts still persist in contemporary society.

Minority Watch Nigeria supported the court’s decision, asserting that the case serves as a model for LGBTQI+ individuals in Nigeria, demonstrating their right to speak up and seek justice despite facing oppression.

“We concur with the magistrate. Those who target queer individuals in Nigeria do so because they believe they can act with impunity. Despite concluding with an out-of-court settlement, this case remains an exemplary illustration of our conviction that LGBTQI people in Nigeria have a voice. At Minority Watch, we are dedicated to amplifying that voice,” Minority Watch emphasized.
