The movie premiered in Lagos on December 17 and had its theatrical release on December 22. Aminat Mayegun, the spokesperson for the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos, presented the suspects on Tuesday.
Mayegun revealed that the arrested individuals are implicated in offenses such as conspiracy, infringement on intellectual property, piracy, and cyber-related crimes related to the unauthorized dissemination of the film in cyberspace.
The criminal complaint was filed on Thursday by Toyin Abraham and Seun Olayemi, the co-producer of ‘Malaika.’ The complainants alleged that certain individuals had criminally pirated their recently released movie, originally meant for cinema viewing only on December 21, 2023.
According to Mayegun, the complainants claimed that these individuals illicitly gained access to the movie, uploaded it on their website, and shared a streaming link on social media for global viewership, thereby infringing on their intellectual rights and depriving them of rightful profits.
In response to the petition, a joint investigation was initiated, involving the Special Investigation Units of the Anti-Fraud and Cybercrime Sections of the Department. The police utilized their intelligence and cybercrime assets to track and apprehend the suspects.
Mayegun conveyed the commitment of Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, AIG in charge of the FCID Alagbon, to collaborate with the movie industry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission to eliminate criminal elements from the space.
Toyin Abraham, addressing the media, disclosed experiencing panic attacks and hospitalization due to the movie piracy. She expressed her dedication to combating piracy for the collective benefit of the entertainment industry. Abraham also commended the police for their decisive actions in apprehending the suspects, emphasizing the importance of protecting creators’ intellectual property.
