The coalition expressed concern that there are indications of a conspiracy by some influential figures, both within and outside the Presidential Villa, to seize control of the Chief of Staff position. They allege that these plotters are trying to link Gbajabiamila to the transactions carried out by the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, who is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The controversy stems from a leaked memo dated December 18, 2023, from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President, revealing President Bola Tinubu’s approval of N3 billion from the COVID-19 Palliative Fund for the verification of the National Social Register. This revelation caused public outrage on social media.

In response to the leaked memo, NEYGA released a statement, signed by its spokesperson, Mr. Ibrahim Dan-Musa. The statement asserts that the detractors’ efforts against the core of the Tinubu administration have failed. The coalition argues that the leaked memo is merely an attempt by certain individuals, both inside and outside the Villa, to implicate Gbajabiamila in the Betta Edu investigation.

The group commended President Tinubu for suspending Edu and emphasized the need for the government to focus on settling down during this period. NEYGA urged politicians to exercise tolerance instead of engaging in a direct campaign of calumny against Gbajabiamila, highlighting his years of service as the Speaker of the House of Representatives without any scandal.

Dan-Musa emphasized that those spreading calumny against Gbajabiamila are blinded by ignorance and illiteracy. The statement further extolled Gbajabiamila’s expertise in law and government procedures, asserting that attempts to tarnish his reputation are baseless. The coalition vowed to expose those behind the alleged campaign against the Chief of Staff, expressing their belief that some individuals are attempting to undermine President Tinubu’s government by attacking its key support structures. The statement concluded by noting that President Tinubu’s public endorsement of his Chief of Staff’s integrity is well-known.
