In a recent revelation, Buhari shared that he rediscovered copies of his certificate while going through a drawer in 2018. He admitted to having possessed the certificate all along but refrained from releasing it to thwart those criticizing him. The ex-president’s comments are documented in chapter 5 of a book authored by his former media adviser, Femi Adesina.
During a presentation by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Registrar and officials who handed Buhari an attestation certificate in November 2018, Adesina quoted the former president as saying, “It would have been impossible for me to attend the Defence Services Staff College, India (1973) and thereafter, United States Army War College, as a Nigerian military officer if I didn’t sit for the WASC examinations in 1961.”
Reflecting on his high school experience, Buhari emphasized the challenges of committing examination fraud during that era, even though it was not entirely impossible. He explained that candidates, including himself and General Musa Yar’adua, underwent a rigorous military examination comprising English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge. English, being the language of general instruction due to Nigeria’s colonial heritage, was crucial for military training. Additionally, Buhari highlighted the significance of Mathematics and Geography in military education, citing the practical skills taught, such as navigating in the wilderness using a compass and applying mathematical theorems like the Pythagoras Theorem to determine one’s position.
