Ingredients:

  1. Plantain Peels: 2 ripe plantains (unripe can be used for a stronger exfoliation)
  2. Cocoa Pod Ash: 1 cup
  3. Shea Butter: 1/2 cup
  4. Palm Kernel Oil: 1/2 cup
  5. Coconut Oil: 1/4 cup
  6. Water: 2 cups
  7. Essential Oils (optional): Lavender, tea tree, or eucalyptus for added fragrance and skin benefits.

Equipment:

  1. Large Mixing Bowl
  2. Pot
  3. Wooden Spoon
  4. Mold or Tray for shaping the soap

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Plantain Peels:
    • Peel the plantains and sun-dry the peels until they are completely dehydrated.
    • Once dry, grind the peels into a fine powder using a blender or mortar and pestle.
  2. Create Cocoa Pod Ash:
    • Burn cocoa pods until you have ash. Allow it to cool.
    • Mix the ash with water and filter out any impurities. Set aside.
  3. Combine Ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the plantain peel powder, shea butter, palm kernel oil, and coconut oil.
    • Heat the mixture gently until the oils and butters are melted.
  4. Add Cocoa Pod Ash:
    • Gradually add the cocoa pod ash solution to the mixture, stirring continuously.
    • Ensure the mixture is well blended, and no lumps remain.
  5. Cooking Process:
    • Transfer the mixture to a pot and cook over low heat.
    • Stir consistently to prevent burning, and cook until the soap thickens.
  6. Cooling and Setting:
    • Once the soap has thickened, remove it from heat and let it cool slightly.
    • Pour the mixture into molds or a tray for shaping.
  7. Curing:
    • Allow the soap to cure for at least 2-3 weeks. This process enhances the soap’s quality and longevity.
  8. Cutting and Storing:
    • Once cured, cut the soap into desired shapes and sizes.
    • Store the soap in a cool, dry place.

Optional:

  • Add a few drops of essential oils during the cooling process for a personalized fragrance.

Usage Tips:

  • African Black Soap is potent, so use it sparingly.
  • It can be crumbly, so handle with care.
