In a press release issued on Thursday, January 25, the department confirmed that the arrest followed a petition submitted by Diamond Waves Law on behalf of the actor’s wife, Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor. The petition alleged that Mr. Ibu’s two sons, Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Valentine Okafor, along with his adopted daughter Jasmine, collaborated to defraud the actor.
The police investigation, initiated on September 6, 2023, revealed that as part of an effort to cover his medical expenses, Mr. Ibu initiated a public fundraising campaign. This initiative attracted contributions from fans, members of the entertainment industry, and the general public, all deposited into a dedicated bank account. Initially managed by Mrs. Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, Mr. Ibu’s wife, for medical bills and family upkeep, the funds were later manipulated by Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu.
According to the FCID spokesperson, ASP Mayegun Aminat, the duo gained control of Mr. Ibu’s phone, hacked into his banking details, and reinstalled the banking app on Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor’s phone. Subsequently, they transferred N55 million from the public fundraising account for Mr. Ibu’s medical bills.
The Police further disclosed that the suspects had orchestrated a sham marriage at Ikoyi registry and applied for visas to leave the country, intending to settle in the UK with the proceeds of their fraudulent activities. Text messages via WhatsApp between Jasmine Chioma and Daniel Okafor were uncovered, detailing their criminal plans. The duo had also applied for a UK Visa before their arrest.
A total of N50 million has been recovered from the suspects, with forensic analysis revealing that N5 million had been spent on questionable transactions. Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu have been charged with conspiracy and stealing at the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Yaba, in Charge No. A/06/2024. They were granted bail in the sum of N15 million with two sureties in like sum, and the case has been adjourned to March 11, 2024. The case file has been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
