Tanya Okpala, along with her sister Katya Okpala, represented Nigeria in tennis during the 1990s. The sisters, born to a mother from Belarus and a father of Igbo extraction, gained recognition for their achievements in the sport.
In the video, Tanya Okpala, visibly mentally unstable and nursing a wound on her left leg, identified herself as a former lawn tennis player who felt abandoned. She revealed that she had been labeled a prostitute by people in the area and had faced pressure to return to her home country. Despite this, she emphasized her identity as an Igbo lady and appealed for assistance, expressing her intention to return to her village the next day to care for her daughter.
Governor Soludo, announcing the intervention on Twitter, stated that Tanya Okpala is now in the custody of the Anambra State Government. He mentioned that she was with the Commissioner for Women Affairs when his wife spoke with her on the phone. Assuring further action, Soludo directed the immediate rehabilitation and reintegration of Okpala with her family, emphasizing his government’s commitment to ensuring her well-being and fruitful reunion with her daughter and family.
