Folashade Akinola, a Family Physician and fervent advocate against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), issued this warning during a phone conversation with BUSHRADIOGIST in Osogbo. Akinola emphasized that participating in such practices equates to mutilating and inflicting trauma upon their children. She underscored the grave consequences of FGM, emphasizing that it could lead to death, with ignorance and negative cultural influences perpetuating this harmful practice in the country.
Akinola disclosed the various detrimental effects associated with FGM, ranging from lifelong physical damages for the girls to low self-esteem and, in extreme cases, death. Among these consequences, she highlighted the loss or lack of sexual desire in women, leading to misunderstandings in intimate relationships. Prolonged obstructive labor, a potential side effect of FGM, may result in difficulties during childbirth due to the altered anatomy caused by the procedure, possibly leading to fatal outcomes through excessive bleeding.
In a positive development, Akinola shared that, through extensive advocacy efforts, the prevalence of FGM in Osun State has seen a significant reduction from 77.6 percent to 45.9 percent. This achievement was attributed to robust sensitization programs and advocacy visits to traditional rulers and religious leaders. Akinola expressed surprise at discovering that even some elites in the state were still engaging in FGM practices, albeit outsourcing them to rural areas.
Commending the state government and stakeholders for their dedication to combating FGM, Akinola acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Health in leading campaigns against this harmful practice. As the world marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation on February 6, the theme for the 2024 edition is “Her Voice. Her Future,” underscoring the importance of empowering women and girls to speak out against FGM for a brighter future.
