The verdict was delivered in response to a legal action initiated by Unung’s wife, the mother of his three children. Justice Ntong Ntong, presiding over the case, directed the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police to apprehend and confine Unung to the Uyo Correctional Centre for a month due to his failure to fulfill parental responsibilities.

Justice Ntong highlighted that the respondent willfully ignored a prior court order issued by Justice Iboro Ukpanah on November 9, 2018. The earlier directive mandated Unung to pay a monthly allowance of N20,000, along with providing a bag of rice, beans, garri, and other essential food items for the well-being of his children.

The judge expressed dismay at Unung’s blatant refusal to comply with the court order, emphasizing that it constituted contemptuous behavior, a blatant disregard for the court’s decision, and a disrespectful challenge to the court’s authority.

The ruling underscored the importance of upholding court orders and emphasized the consequences of failing to meet parental obligations, serving as a deterrent for others who may contemplate similar neglect of familial responsibilities.
