The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully intercepted a significant quantity of illicit drugs and substances weighing 7,345.209 kilograms, with an estimated street value of N125.71 million in the Federal Capital Territory. The intercepted drugs encompassed a variety of substances, including Marijuana, Cocaine, Diazepam, Methamphetamine, Rohypnol, Tramadol, Pentazocine, Heroin, Megadon, and Ecstasy, among others.
Breaking down the seizures, Commander Tsakuwa reported that operatives of the agency confiscated 7,138.72kg of marijuana during the specified period. Additionally, other drugs seized in 2023 included 0.5kg of Cocaine, 29.629kg of Diazepam, 4.587kg of Methamphetamine, 5.934kg of Rohypnol, and 133.753kg of Tramadol. The remaining illicit substances intercepted comprised 21.727kg of Pentazocine, 0.002kg of Heroin, 0.263kg of Megadon, and 0.134kg of Ecstasy.
The total street value of all intercepted drugs and substances amounted to N125,714,620 million, according to the NDLEA commander.
In the course of these operations, a total of 640 suspects were apprehended, with 614 males and 26 females among them. Out of this number, 295 suspects faced charges in court, resulting in 201 convictions, while 264 cases remain pending in the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Touching upon rehabilitation efforts, Commander Tsakuwa highlighted that during the reviewed year, 175 drug users received counseling and support to reintegrate into society. Among these, 172 were males and three were females, reflecting the agency’s commitment to addressing not only the enforcement aspect but also rehabilitation and community reintegration in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
