Chukwu, a mother of 11 children, was apprehended along with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy Chukwu, with whom she conspired to sell the children. Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, acting undercover, posed as a potential buyer for the children after receiving information about Chukwu’s intent to sell them.

During interrogation following her arrest, Chinyere Chukwu claimed to be from Ozubulu and stated that her husband had passed away after the birth of their first two children. She explained that she had subsequently given birth to more children from different men and wanted to sell two of them to support the others.

However, a delegation from the Ozubulu community, led by Chief Chris Ononuju, the President General, and Lady Ndupu Clara, visited the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare’s office to dispute Chukwu’s claims. The delegation asserted that Chukwu was neither an indigene nor married to any member of the community.

According to Chief Chris Ononuju, all investigations conducted by the community indicate that Chinyere Chukwu is not from Ozubulu. He clarified that the man she referred to as her deceased husband is alive and is a member of their community, having lost his wife six or seven years ago. Ononuju revealed that Chukwu had been previously asked to leave the community due to unclear activities.
