A handwritten note from Queen Elizabeth II to “the residents of Sydney” is concealed inside one of the city’s most iconic buildings, but it won’t be read for another 63 years.

The Queen wrote the letter in November 1986, following extensive restoration work on the building.

Even her personal staff is unaware of what she wrote, and many Sydney residents will never learn.

Only Her Majesty’s orders are visible in the letter, which is framed inside a glass case in the restricted dome region at the top of the QVB.

The letter is written to “Right and Honourable Lord Mayor of Sydney, Australia.”

‘Greetings. ‘Would you please open this envelope and communicate to the residents of SYDNEY my message to them on a suitable day to be decided by you in the year 2085 A.D.?’ reads the letter, which is subsequently signed by the Queen.
