The arrest of Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, was reported earlier on Wednesday in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. A viral video circulating on the internet depicts the manner in which Abure was apprehended by armed police officers.

The arrest follows a petition filed by LP Youth Leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, accusing Abure of engaging in violent acts against him. Additionally, the suspended National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Mrs. Oluchi Opara, demanded that Abure submit the party’s finances for a forensic audit and explain the source of funds used to acquire properties both in Nigeria and overseas between 2022 and 2023.

Speaking to journalists, Momoh stated that the arrests were made based on a written petition endorsed by the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Zone 5 from the office of the Inspector General of Police. The suspects were apprehended for attempted murder, conspiracy, illegal possession of arms, and other related offenses, as evidenced by video clips and recordings showing the petitioner being assaulted upon his return home last year to conduct ward matters.

According to Momoh, Abure and the other suspects were found in possession of firearms, including a shotgun and three rounds of ammunition. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.

The petition submitted by Anselm Aphimia to the Edo State Police Commissioner alleged a “heinous act of violence” perpetrated against him on December 29, 2023. Anselm Aphimia, who is a member and National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, recounted the events and emphasized the importance of justice and safety in political activities.
