In a press release dated February 20, the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone, in agreement with the Food and Drug Authority of Ghana, highlighted the presence of dangerous levels of Sildenafil Citrate in Coco Samba. This confirms earlier suspicions about the adverse effects of consuming the mixture, including serious health complications and potential damage to the penis.
The release, signed by the registrar of the board, James Komeh, disclosed that each bottle of Coco Samba contains an excessive dose (193 mg) of Sildenafil Citrate, compared to the usual prescribed dose of 50-100 mg. Overdosing on Sildenafil Citrate can lead to severe side effects such as a significant drop in blood pressure, visual disturbances, headache, dizziness, chest pain, and painful and prolonged erection, which may cause permanent damage to the penis.
Initial tests conducted in Sierra Leone laboratories prompted authorities to issue a warning pending confirmatory tests. Sildenafil Citrate, commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction, is frequently misused by individuals seeking to enhance sexual performance without medical supervision or prescription.
The statement also revealed that analyses of other products, including Olekoko Akson Bitters, Oga Abeg, and Good Time Natural Herbal Formula, uncovered the presence of Sildenafil Citrate in varying amounts.
The pharmacy board urged the public to cease consumption of these harmful products and report any individuals or institutions found marketing them. Additionally, they encouraged reporting of any side effects related to these products or others to the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone.
Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has also issued a public alert on Coco Samba, suspected to be circulating in local liquor shops and rural retail outlets. The agency reported that a 100ml bottle of the herbal mixture contains more than the approved daily dose of sildenafil, with analysis confirming undeclared amounts of sildenafil (150mg), exceeding the maximum daily dose.
