Former Nigerian military head of state, Yakubu Gowon, played a crucial role in advocating for the removal of sanctions, urging ECOWAS to reconsider. The Head of States within ECOWAS eventually heeded Gowon’s counsel, leading to the lifting of sanctions. In response, Edwin Clark expressed his commendation for ECOWAS leadership, particularly acknowledging the efforts of President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Gowon.
In a statement personally signed by Clark, he praised Gowon for displaying a high sense of responsibility, emphasizing the former leader’s pivotal role in the formation of ECOWAS in 1975. Clark recounted the challenges Gowon overcame, uniting diverse regional entities into a single community. He also reminisced about his own involvement as Commissioner of Information and Special Envoy during the Summit held at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos.
Clark extended congratulations to President Tinubu and other ECOWAS leaders for their prompt response to Gowon’s counsel, resulting in the removal of most sanctions after the Summit held on February 24, 2024. He expressed hope that these interventions would contribute to an amicable resolution within ECOWAS, fostering positive developments in the three countries involved.
