One fatality and five individuals are in critical condition in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, following the consumption of Amala reportedly prepared with contaminated cassava flour instead of yam flour. The incident unfolded on the night of February 28 at Temidire Atoyebi area along Ajaawa Road in Ogbomoso.

The affected family, comprising grandmother Mrs. Victoria Paul Adewole, her four children, and a granddaughter, experienced discomfort a few hours after consuming the meal. Neighbors, alerted by their cries for help, swiftly took them to a private hospital at Ogbomoso Baptist High School area, where the granddaughter tragically succumbed.

Subsequently, the family was transferred to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, where medical professionals are now working tirelessly to save the lives of the remaining family members.

An undisclosed source revealed that cassava peels were ground and used to make flour for the amala, as the family couldn’t afford yam or cassava flour. The mother and her four surviving children are still undergoing treatment, prompting an appeal for assistance from compassionate individuals to help prevent further casualties within the family.

Professor Olawale Olakulehin, Chief Medical Director of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, confirmed the incident and provided an update on the victims’ conditions. While one family member died before reaching the hospital, four others are responding to treatment, with one individual still in critical condition as of February 29.
