Highlighting the substantial advantages associated with a knowledge-based economy, Dangote pointed to successful models in countries like South Korea, India, China, and the Asian tigers. These nations, he noted, strategically embraced and institutionalized knowledge-based economies, now reaping the rewards of such a transition.

Referencing a World Bank publication by Ismail Radwan and Giulia Pellegrini, Dangote emphasized that leveraging knowledge for development is not a novel concept and plays a pivotal role in determining a nation’s prosperity. He argued that a knowledge-based economy involves more than just establishing high-tech industries; adopting existing technologies from developed countries can significantly enhance productivity and economic growth.

Represented by Engineer Mansur Ahmed, the Group Executive Director of the Dangote conglomerate, Dangote quoted the World Bank’s prescription for Nigeria’s transition to a knowledge-based economy. The key areas of focus include improving the business environment, enhancing education and skills, fostering innovation systems, and upgrading information communication infrastructure.

Dangote stressed the need for a conducive business environment that incentivizes the efficient application of existing knowledge. He suggested tapping into the wealth of knowledge accumulated by government research institutions, particularly in agriculture, where new seed varieties and crops have been developed. To encourage utilization, Dangote proposed government incentives for firms adopting these innovations.

Furthermore, Dangote recommended government intervention in phasing out older, low-yielding crop varieties and supporting the cultivation of new ones through subsidies, free fertilizers, and assistance from agriculture extension officers. Drawing parallels with the successful auction and licensing of GSM operators in the communication sector, he highlighted the transformative impact such policies could have on job creation and technology transfer.

Dangote also called for educational reforms, urging a shift towards skill development over a focus on paper qualifications. He advocated for the encouragement and support of Nigerian youths passionate about new technologies, emphasizing the importance of expanding entrepreneurship facilities and hubs.

Dignitaries present at the pre-convocation lecture included Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, and the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sagir Abbas. The upcoming convocation ceremony is set to award honorary doctorate degrees to two distinguished personalities, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.
