The Kwara State Police Command has reported the apprehension of Atolagbe Yemi Oje, accused of the heinous crime of raping and causing the death of a palm oil vendor, Mayowa Ajiboye. Police Commissioner Victor Olaiya, in a statement to the press on Friday, condemned the act as “barbaric” and labeled the perpetrator a “monster.” Initial findings from the investigation revealed that in November 2023, the victim had paid the suspect N1600 to gather firewood in the forest for cooking palm fruit, a service he failed to deliver.

On February 22, 2024, the victim, accompanied by her young daughter Ope, went to collect firewood in the bush. Unbeknownst to them, the suspect approached and joined them, feigning innocence while harboring malicious intentions. The suspect tricked the victim’s daughter into carrying some firewood to the palm fruit preparation site and then lured her deeper into the bush under the guise of gathering more wood.

Commissioner Olaiya recounted the horrific incident, stating that while the victim was distracted by a phone call, the suspect attacked her from behind, causing her to fall. Despite her attempts to defend herself with a stick, the suspect overpowered her, viciously assaulting her with the same stick. Subsequently, he proceeded to rape her, mutilating her genital area, and conducted a gruesome act of setting her ablaze with a cutlass. The suspect then discarded the burnt remains in a river to conceal the crime.

Additionally, the commissioner noted that the suspect hid the victim’s phone in the bush, disposing of the SIM card and battery. The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime, and investigations are ongoing to unveil any other motives. Once completed, the suspect will face charges in court.
