The scheduled hearing, initially set for Monday, was once again postponed to March 18, as reported by Naija News. Justice James Omotosho had designated this date, but no legal representation on behalf of Kanu appeared during the intended session.

During the subsequent hearing, the defense counsel informed the court that they had not yet received the essential documents pertaining to the case. In response, Kanu’s lawyer asserted that all necessary procedures for serving the defense had been completed. The judge adjourned the matter to allow the plaintiff to properly serve the defense in the lawsuit.

Notably, Kanu, represented by his lawyer Ejimakor, had initiated a fresh lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1633/2023) seeking the protection of his fundamental rights while in custody. This motion, filed in accordance with applicable regulations, alleged violations such as the forcible seizure and photocopying of confidential legal documents, denial of the right to be defended by chosen legal practitioners, and eavesdropping on confidential consultations.

Kanu’s relief requests included a declaration against these actions and an injunction to prevent the respondents from confiscating and duplicating confidential legal papers. Additionally, he sought compensation amounting to N1 billion, covering various damages resulting from the violation of his rights, including mental, emotional, and psychological harm.

The embattled IPOB leader also petitioned for a court order requiring the respondents to issue an official letter of apology for violating his fundamental right to a fair hearing. As the legal proceedings continue, the case is slated for further examination on March 18.
