Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was visibly emotional on Wednesday, March 6, as he paid homage to the late Herbert Wigwe, former Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc.

Expressing his deep sentiments during the tribute held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos state, Sanusi revealed that he had entrusted Herbert with overseeing a trust for his children’s education. Tearfully, he acknowledged Herbert’s unwavering support, stating that he had anticipated passing away before him.

“About two years ago, I entrusted all my savings into a trust for the education of my children. I have many, and as a father, my priority is ensuring they receive a good education. I appointed Herbert to manage this trust, believing that even if I were to die without leaving any money, he would ensure my children’s education. I thought I would die before Herbert,” shared the former monarch, his voice breaking.

Sanusi continued by recounting how Herbert stood by him during challenging times after his removal as Emir of Kano by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The late banker had reassured Sanusi of his unwavering support and loyalty. Sanusi recalled Herbert’s swift action, providing a plane to transport him from Kano to Lagos after his dethronement.

“When I faced problems in Kano, I called him about six months before leaving. I told him, ‘Herbert, I know you are doing your best to solve these problems, but I am convinced this is what will happen.’ He assured me, saying, ‘Your Highness, don’t worry. Whatever happens, we are here for you.’ On the day I learned of my dethronement, I called him, wanting to come to Lagos. By noon, Herbert had a plane at the Kano tarmac. The plan was to take me into exile for many years. He received my family, put them in a hotel, and later arranged accommodation,” shared Sanusi, reflecting on Herbert’s steadfast support.
