The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has issued a stern warning to electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) concerning the erratic power supply experienced nationwide. On Wednesday, March 6, Adelabu revealed through his official communication channel that the Chief Executives of major DisCos, including Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, along with the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, have been summoned for a critical meeting.
The primary agenda of this meeting is to address the escalating power supply challenges in their respective regions and collaboratively devise sustainable solutions. Adelabu emphasized that while the Ministry has been pressuring Generating Companies to improve performance, achieving over 4000MW in recent times, some DisCos are failing in their responsibility to adequately distribute the supplied power. Furthermore, he highlighted the exacerbating impact of power infrastructure vandalism in areas such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.
Expressing unwavering commitment, Adelabu asserted, “Willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed.” Additionally, he instructed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to prioritize the repair of damaged transmission towers and power lines to enhance supply in affected regions. The minister acknowledged the sector’s challenges during recent supervisory visits to power-generating plants and assured Nigerians that plans are in motion to settle outstanding debts to power generation and gas supply companies.
Despite the efforts to address these issues, Adelabu urged electricity consumers to remain patient, emphasizing the government’s dedication to resolving power-related challenges and providing improved service to all Nigerians. The warning comes as part of the government’s proactive measures to hold distribution companies accountable for their performance and ensure a more reliable power supply across the nation.
