Two schools in the Akpabuyo local government area of Cross River state have been shut down due to a measles outbreak, according to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk. The affected schools are Navy Secondary School and Penniel Primary School, both situated in the same region. The State Rapid Response Team from the Ministry of Health has been activated and deployed to the affected area.
Dr. Ayuk stated that reactive vaccination for children is currently underway in the affected areas, as well as in other local government areas without reported cases. The State Primary Healthcare Development Agency is also intensifying routine immunization efforts to enhance herd immunity. Emphasizing the highly contagious nature of measles, especially among non-immunized children, Dr. Ayuk urged parents and caregivers to actively participate in routine immunization campaigns for their children.
The commissioner further highlighted that the Ministry of Health is taking swift and comprehensive measures to contain the outbreak, underscoring the importance of community-wide cooperation in the vaccination efforts. The article was reported by Linda Ikeji on March 8, 2024.
