Gunmen have tragically claimed the lives of two farmers within the Onipi community, situated in Adoka District of Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State.

Among the victims, Inalegwu Edri Justice, an engineering graduate who diligently worked his way through school, has been identified by friends.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday morning, March 19, 2024, resulted in injuries to several other farmers, with some reported missing. The victims were targeted while carrying out their farming activities, as per accounts from local residents.

Alfred Oketa Omakwu, the Caretaker Council Chairman of Otukpo LGA, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that two farmers lost their lives, while 12 others sustained injuries and were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention. Additionally, tricycles laden with yams were set ablaze along the farm road during the attack.

This assault marks the first instance of such violence in the Onipi community, according to Omakwu.

Meanwhile, a close friend of one of the deceased, identified as Comr Succeed, shared a heartbreaking message expressing disbelief over the loss. He referenced a previous conversation with the victim where concerns about herdsmen invasion were raised, highlighting the cruel irony of the situation.
