Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has launched a pointed critique against Afe Babalola, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in response to Babalola’s remarks on the developmental progress of past administrations in Ekiti State.
Babalola’s comments, made on Monday, suggested that former governors of Ekiti had deviated from the original visions for the state, failing to establish a robust framework for its advancement. Without naming specific governors, Babalola implied a collective failure in leadership that impeded the state’s development.
In an interview with ThisDay, Fayemi accused Babalola of displaying traits of “narcissistic personality disorder,” insinuating an inability to acknowledge the positive contributions of others. Fayemi defended his tenure, asserting that Babalola’s assessment was biased and overlooked the achievements of his administration.
Fayemi highlighted a history of non-support from Babalola in his political pursuits, suggesting a longstanding partisan divide between them. Despite this, Fayemi acknowledged Babalola’s right to support other candidates and emphasized that he had extended invitations for collaboration, including appointing him to chair the Airport Viability Committee during his first term.
While acknowledging Babalola’s contributions to Ekiti State, Fayemi expressed concern over what he perceived as a reluctance to recognize the accomplishments of others, particularly governors preceding him. He stressed that every governor had made strides in their tenure, handing over a better state to their successors.
Fayemi concluded by expressing hope that Babalola’s recognition of Governor Oyebanji’s achievements signaled a departure from biased assessments, cautioning against a mindset that may hinder acknowledging the merits of others.
The back-and-forth between Fayemi and Babalola underscores tensions over the interpretation of Ekiti State’s developmental trajectory and the role of past administrations in shaping its progress.
