A woman in Hyderabad, India, allegedly murdered her 19-year-old daughter, Mote Bhargavi, after discovering her at home with her boyfriend, according to police reports on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

The tragic incident unfolded at their residence in Ibrahimpatnam, Dandumailaram village, occurring on Monday.

Identified as Mote Jangamma, the mother purportedly physically attacked her daughter before using a saree to strangle her.

Initially attempting to stage her daughter’s death as a suicide, the investigation revealed signs of strangulation on the victim’s neck, confirming foul play.

Bhargavi was a student at a private college in Dilsukhnagar, as confirmed by Rachakonda police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Maheshwaram, Sunitha Reddy, informed TOI that a murder case had been filed, with investigations ongoing to uncover the motive behind the crime.

The sequence of events began on Monday morning when Bhargavi’s father, Ailaiaih, left for work, leaving Jangamma and her 17-year-old son at their village field, leaving Bhargavi alone at home.

Upon Jangamma’s return around 1 pm, she discovered Bhargavi conversing with her boyfriend, provoking her into a furious confrontation, according to police accounts.

As the situation escalated, Bhargavi’s brother, alerted by the boyfriend, rushed home but found the doors locked from the inside. Peering through a window, he allegedly witnessed his mother attempting to strangle Bhargavi with a scarf.

Upon intense knocking, Jangamma emerged, claiming Bhargavi had fallen with a saree around her neck. However, Bhargavi was pronounced dead by a local doctor who arrived with relatives summoned by the brother.

Following a complaint lodged by the boy later that day, Ibrahimpatnam police initiated a murder investigation.

Police disclosed that Jangamma had persistently pressured Bhargavi to marry a close relative, which Bhargavi opposed, insisting on marrying her boyfriend, also from their caste.

The simmering conflict reached a tragic climax on Monday when Jangamma, upon encountering Bhargavi with her boyfriend, allegedly resorted to violence.

Jangamma was detained for questioning, while Bhargavi’s father refuted allegations of opposing her relationship, expressing disbelief at the tragic turn of events.

The investigation continues into this heartbreaking incident that has shocked the community.
