The President of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore group, Bello Bodejo, faced arraignment before the Federal High Court in Abuja by the federal government on Friday.
Bodejo, charged before Justice Inyang Ekwo with three counts, stands accused of allegedly establishing and supporting an ethnic militia group called Kungiya Zaman Lafiya.
The case, brought forth by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), alleges Bodejo’s violation of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022.
Despite the charges, Bodejo pleaded not guilty during the court proceedings.
Subsequently, Justice Ekwo ordered Bodejo’s continued detention in the custody of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) until the commencement of trial, scheduled for May 27.
Bodejo’s arrest occurred on January 23 at the Miyetti Allah’s Head Office in Nasarawa State, reportedly linked to the formation of a vigilante group in the state.
In response to calls for Bodejo’s bail, the federal government, represented by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, clarified the necessity of Bodejo’s arrest and ongoing detention.
The government’s position, presented by Federal Ministry of Justice lawyer Ms. Y.A. Imana, underscored the national security implications of the matter, urging the court to deny Bodejo’s application for unconditional release.
