Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has revealed how a spontaneous decision to revise the initial design of the Second Niger Bridge bypass road resulted in substantial savings of N300 billion for taxpayers.
Umahi disclosed this during an inspection tour of the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway section IV (Aba-Port Harcourt), managed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd (CCECC) on Sunday.
He explained, “Just two days ago, in the company of these leaders, we visited Asaba and Onitsha to assess the design of the Second Niger Bridge bypass. During this visit, we identified defects in the design and collectively agreed upon a new design. This singular action saved the country over N300 billion.”
Umahi’s remarks were conveyed in a statement issued by his Special Assistant (Media), Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, in Abuja on Monday.
Emphasizing President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to leaving a legacy of robust road infrastructure while ensuring value for taxpayers’ money, Umahi reiterated the administration’s focus on securing Nigeria’s future and fostering economic prosperity.
He stated, “The Renewed Hope administration under President Tinubu is committed to constructing enduring road infrastructure with efficient designs at minimal costs.”
The minister, accompanied by a member of the Senate Committee on Works and Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Senate, alongside leaders from various political backgrounds in the South East, highlighted key principles guiding projects under the Renewed Hope agenda. These principles include prioritizing design and cost-effectiveness, timely project delivery, and implementing innovations to ensure zero maintenance and prolonged durability of road infrastructure in Nigeria.
Umahi urged contractors to consider the inconvenience faced by road users and ensure that ongoing projects are made accessible during the rainy season.
Expressing gratitude to the President for enabling the transformation of Nigeria’s road infrastructure, Umahi stressed the importance of swift completion of projects to alleviate the hardships faced by commuters.
During the inspection of various road projects, including those handled by CCECC, RCC, and CGC, Umahi urged contractors to expedite their efforts to meet milestones ahead of the rainy season.
Regarding the Eleme refinery road project, Umahi outlined the meticulous process involved in ensuring the stability and longevity of the road, highlighting measures taken such as excavation, filling of failed sections, and stabilization using cement.
Stakeholders from the South East region who accompanied the Minister commended President Tinubu for appointing a competent individual to lead the Ministry of Works and for his commitment to reviving the country’s economy.
They reiterated their faith in the Renewed Hope administration and expressed confidence in the Minister’s leadership, praising his hands-on approach and expertise in project implementation.
In conclusion, stakeholders acknowledged the tangible progress witnessed in road construction under Umahi’s leadership, attributing it to effective utilization of resources and President Tinubu’s vision for infrastructure development in Nigeria.
