Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has issued a directive prioritizing the payment of salaries to civil servants and pensioners over political office holders. Expressing concern over the prolonged delay in pension payments by previous administrations, Otti reassured the public that his administration has successfully cleared the backlog of unpaid pensions.
In his Easter message to the citizens of Abia, Governor Otti questioned the deprivation of retired civil servants’ rightful pensions for an extended period of time. He emphasized that pension payments should not be a cause for celebration, acknowledging the retirees’ relief upon finally receiving what they were owed after significant delays.
Otti pledged, “Never again shall our senior citizens be subjected to the agony of unpaid entitlements.” He directed that full pensions must be paid on or before the 28th of every month, aligning with civil servants’ salary payments.
Furthermore, Otti assured that political office holders would only be paid after fulfilling obligations to pensioners and civil servants in full. He thanked the Nigerian Union of Pensioners in the State for their trust in his administration, emphasizing the paramount importance of the well-being of the people of Abia.
Governor Otti also highlighted Abia’s improved security status, encouraging both natives and visitors to explore and invest in the state without apprehension. He extended Easter greetings to the people of Abia and Christians worldwide, promising development in every part of the state under his vigilant leadership.
