Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, recently shed light on the pivotal role played by journalists in ushering an end to the military regimes of former dictators Ibrahim Babangida and the late Sani Abacha. Speaking on the ‘Mic On Podcast’ hosted by Channels TV presenter, Seun Okinbaloye, Onanuga underscored the importance of media activism in fostering democratic transitions.
During Babangida’s eight-year reign from 1985 to 1993, and later under the interim government led by Ernest Shonekan, journalists like Onanuga spearheaded a movement to hold those in power accountable and advocate for democratic governance. Reflecting on his tenure at the African Concord magazine, Onanuga emphasized their commitment to spotlighting individuals at the core of societal issues, rather than merely addressing surface-level concerns.
Their journalism aimed to challenge authority and champion the rights of Nigerians, striving to replace military rule with elected civilian leadership. Onanuga recalled the collective effort to resist Babangida’s regime and later confront Abacha’s oppressive rule. Despite facing personal risks and persecution, journalists persisted in their crusade for democracy.
Onanuga’s departure from African Concord, sparked by a difference in editorial stance regarding Babangida, exemplifies the sacrifices made in defense of journalistic integrity. Refusing to compromise his principles for the sake of appeasing power, Onanuga chose to walk away rather than betray his values.
The founding of TheNews magazine in 1993 marked a turning point, as Onanuga and his colleagues embarked on a new chapter in independent journalism. Their unwavering commitment to truth-telling, even in the face of intimidation and censorship, underscored the power of the press in shaping political discourse and driving societal change.
Despite facing harassment and surveillance from security forces, Onanuga maintained his resolve, earning respect for his principled stance. His experiences highlight the dual nature of journalism—gentlemanly in demeanor yet formidable in its capacity to challenge authority and expose injustice.
In essence, Onanuga’s narrative underscores the indelible impact of journalism as a catalyst for democratic reform, emphasizing the enduring relevance of a free and vigilant press in safeguarding the principles of democracy and accountability.
