In a recent ruling at the Grade 1 Area Court in Lugbe, Abuja, a labourer named Tile Dominic, aged 26, has been sentenced to eight weeks behind bars for the theft of wire. Presiding over the case, Judge Malam Aliyu Kagarko found Dominic guilty of the charges he faced, to which Dominic had pleaded guilty.
Despite the prison sentence, Judge Kagarko granted Dominic the option of paying a fine of N20,000 in lieu of serving the full term.
The prosecution, led by Mr. E. A. Nnamani, outlined the case, stating that Dominic, residing in New Nyanya within the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was accused of stealing a roll of 1.5mm wire from a person known simply as Mr. Johnson. The theft allegedly took place on March 28. Additionally, Nnamani revealed that Dominic attempted another theft on March 29 but was apprehended in the act.
According to Nnamani, the charges against Dominic fell under Section 287 of the Penal Code, pertaining to theft. The incident occurred while Dominic was employed as a labourer at the NNPC Estate in Lugbe, Abuja.
The matter was reported to the Lugbe Police Station by Mr. John Ogbache on March 29. Subsequently, the stolen wire was found in Dominic’s possession, and during police interrogation, he confessed to the crime.
