Three juveniles in China face the death penalty for fatally assaulting their 13-year-old classmate in Hebei province, northern China, last month.
The victim, identified as Wang, endured prolonged bullying from the three suspects, all under the age of 14 at the time of the incident, before succumbing to their assault.
Wang’s father expressed his anguish on Douyin, a Chinese social media platform, describing the brutality of the attack and urging for severe punishment, even advocating for the ultimate penalty.
Surveillance footage captured the final moments before Wang’s demise, showing him surrounded by his classmates on March 10. His phone ceased functioning an hour later, prompting a frantic search by his relatives.
Tragically, the boy’s lifeless body was discovered the next day, concealed under a tarp in an abandoned vegetable greenhouse in Feixiang district, Handan city. The suspects, identified as Zhang, Li, and Ma, were apprehended by authorities on March 11.
Investigations revealed that the crime was premeditated, with the perpetrators digging a pit on two occasions, indicating a calculated act of violence.
According to Wang’s relatives and their legal representative, the victim had long been subjected to harassment and extortion by his assailants. Police identified the suspects through surveillance footage and testimonies from classmates.
The provincial prosecutor announced that it had received a request from the police to prosecute the suspects for intentional murder, determining that the three minors, aged between 12 and 14, were criminally liable for Wang’s death.
Amidst public outcry, discussions on the age of criminal responsibility have surfaced, prompted by a string of juvenile murder cases in China. Zhang Dongshuo, a defense attorney in Beijing, highlighted the need for a reevaluation of legal standards concerning minors’ culpability in such crimes.
