Nonjabulo Nokukhanya Nkosi, a 37-year-old South African woman, has been handed a life sentence for the murder of Dumisani Qwabe, a 47-year-old candidate for ward councilor. Nkosi had initially planned to hire a hitman to execute her boyfriend but when the plan failed, she took matters into her own hands.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court sentenced Nkosi for the murder.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority in KZN, Nkosi and Qwabe were in a romantic relationship, but Nkosi decided to end his life. NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara stated, “She approached Xolani Skhumbuzo Mtambo to arrange for a hitman to kill him, but the plan fell through.” Following the failure of her initial plan, Nkosi procured a firearm and petrol to carry out the murder herself.

Ramkisson-Kara elaborated, “On October 25, 2021, Nkosi met Mtambo at a marketplace, where he loaded the firearm for her, and showed her how to use it. Thereafter, Qwabe received a call from Nkosi and left his house.” Later that evening, Qwabe’s vehicle was discovered ablaze on the road between Nongoma and Pongola, with his charred remains inside.

After Qwabe’s demise, Nkosi was absent from work due to burns on her left cheek and left hand. Investigations unveiled that Nkosi was using Qwabe’s bank card and banking app following his death, indicating her involvement. Subsequently, she was apprehended, and a scrutiny of her cellphone records led to Mtambo’s arrest three months later.
