PDP Senate Caucus Dismisses Calls For Damagum’s Resignation As Unwarranted And Inappropriate....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senate Caucus has firmly dismissed the calls urging Umar Illiya Damagum, the party’s National Chairman, to step down. These demands for Damagum’s resignation emerged just ahead of the imminent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for this week.

Party members advocating for Damagum’s resignation are pushing for a shift to the original plan of appointing a national chairman from the North Central zone, as initially intended by the party.

The recent plea for Damagum’s departure was voiced by opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives, spearheaded by Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo State. They accused Damagum of purportedly aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and neglecting to convene the statutory quarterly NEC meetings since he assumed the position of PDP acting national chairman last year.

In response, Senator Abba Moro (Benue South), the leader of the PDP Senate Caucus, rebuffed these calls in a statement released on Sunday by his media aide, Emmanuel Eche’Ofun John. Moro deemed the demands ill-timed and unsuitable, asserting that they represent the personal stance of Ugochinyere and not the collective view of PDP federal lawmakers, particularly PDP senators.

Moro emphasized the impending NEC meeting as an opportunity for members to express their views on the party’s operations and stressed the anticipation of a vigorous dialogue among party leaders and members concerning both internal matters and national issues.

Regarding the PDP national chairman seat, Senator Moro underlined that there is no justification for suggesting an open contest or zoning the seat to any region beyond the North Central. He cited the party’s constitution, which stipulates the provision of two deputy chairmen and outlines the procedure to be followed in the event of a vacancy in the chairman’s position.

Moro discouraged any notion of opening the chairman seat for contest or zoning it to another region, emphasizing the importance of prudence among NEC members to ensure the party’s continued strength and relevance.

In conclusion, the PDP Senate Caucus remains resolute in their support for Damagum as the National Chairman and urges party members to approach the forthcoming NEC meeting with discernment to safeguard the party’s interests and unity.
