In another development within the banking sector, Abubakar Suleiman, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank, recently addressed the induction ceremony of 485 new members of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos. Suleiman expressed a striking viewpoint, suggesting that professional bankers should not necessarily aim for wealth unless through illegitimate means, according to Punch newspaper.
Speaking before an esteemed audience including former institute presidents and the Lagos Commissioner of Finance, Abayomi Oluyomi, Suleiman emphasized the service-oriented nature of banking as a profession. He cautioned against viewing a career in professional banking solely as a path to immense wealth, highlighting the importance of ethical conduct.
Suleiman remarked, “If your aim is wealth, and I say this with utmost seriousness, if you encounter a professional banker who claims to be wealthy, scrutinize them and inquire how. Simply being a professional in an employee capacity does not naturally lead to immense wealth, unless one engages in unethical practices.”
He further emphasized that pursuing certification and investing in one’s professional career indicates a commitment beyond monetary gains. Suleiman concluded by underscoring the purpose-driven aspect of banking, suggesting that those solely focused on amassing personal wealth may compromise their ethical integrity in the process.
