Alleged Money Laundering Case Against Fayose Halted Due To Judge’s Absence
Alleged Money Laundering Case Against Fayose Halted Due To Judge’s Absence....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The alleged money laundering trial of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose hit a snag as Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke’s absence stalled proceedings at the Federal High Court in Lagos. Justice Aneke was reportedly on official duty, prompting an adjournment of the case until July 1 for further proceedings.
Fayose faces prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged involvement in a N6.9 billion fraud and money laundering scheme. Initially arraigned on October 22, 2018, before Justice Mojisola Olatotegun, alongside his company Spotless Investment Ltd, on 11 counts related to fraud and money laundering, Fayose pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.
The case was later transferred to Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke on July 2, 2019, following an EFCC petition. Fayose reaffirmed his innocence and continued on the earlier bail while awaiting trial. The EFCC has been presenting its case before Justice Aneke, with witnesses providing evidence.
The charges against Fayose include allegations that on June 17, 2014, he and Abiodun Agbele received N1.2 billion for his Ekiti gubernatorial campaign, knowing it to be proceeds of crime. Additionally, Fayose allegedly received $5 million in cash from then Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, without proper financial channels. He’s also accused of using N200 million to purchase property in Abuja under his sister’s name, knowing the funds were illicit.
These allegations are in violation of various sections of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2011. As the legal proceedings continue, the case underscores ongoing efforts to combat financial crimes in Nigeria’s judicial system.
