Efforts to locate and apprehend the fleeing inmates of the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State have been intensified by the Nigeria Correctional Service, according to sources revealed to Saturday BUSHRADIOGIST.
During a visit to the Niger custodial centre, where 119 inmates escaped due to damage caused by a recent rainstorm, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, pledged government’s commitment to relocate several correctional facilities to enhance infrastructure and security.
“This facility, built in 1914 for 250 inmates, was overcrowded with 499 before the incident. We need to address the issue of overcrowding by relocating these centres to more suitable environments,” Tunji-Ojo emphasized.
The Minister assured that steps were being taken to prevent similar occurrences in other facilities nationwide. Despite 119 initial escapees, 14 have been recaptured, as confirmed by Samson Duza, spokesman for the Federal Capital Territory command of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Tunji-Ojo stressed the need for collaborative efforts among agencies to swiftly recover the escapees and highlighted the imperative of reforms across the nation’s custodial centres.
