The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended eight individuals for unlawfully operating as private guards and seized four pump action guns along with 16 live cartridges from them.

Olatunde Maku, the Commandant of NSCDC in Anambra State, disclosed that the suspects were nabbed during a recent crackdown on unlicensed private security guards in Awka. He emphasized the NSCDC’s commitment to curbing the activities of unauthorized private security guards, particularly in light of prevailing security challenges.

Addressing the media at the agency’s headquarters in Awka, Maku stated, “We are fully dedicated to fulfilling the NSCDC mandate in Anambra State, as directed by the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi. These suspects were apprehended following a raid conducted on Thursday, April 25, 2024, in Awka.”

Maku elaborated that preliminary investigations revealed some of the suspects were posing as members of the Anambra Vigilance Group, while others were hired by hotels for security duties despite lacking proper licensing or registration.

He stressed that the ongoing crackdown aims to thwart the proliferation of illegal security outfits, minimize the risk of security breaches, and deter criminal activities. Maku vowed to dismantle any illegal outfit, arrest and prosecute their operators, and confiscate any illicit weapons in their possession.

“Our objective is to restore order in the private security sector and ensure the safety of all residents in Anambra. This arrest and seizure of weapons mark a significant milestone in our efforts to combat crime,” Maku affirmed.
