After 10 Years, Man’s Trial Yet To Commence At Kirikiri Prison

In the heart of Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos, 29-year-old Chidozie Ajokujie finds himself ensnared in a labyrinth of despair, his youthful dreams eclipsed by a decade-long confinement behind unyielding iron bars.

Arrested at the tender age of 19 in 2014 under allegations of robbery, Chidozie’s life has become a narrative of suspended hope, with each passing day amplifying the weight of his wrongful incarceration.

Reports reveal a staggering tally of over 50 court appearances in his quest for exoneration, yet justice remains an elusive specter, perpetuating his anguish within the confines of the prison walls.

Chidozie’s ordeal traces back to a fateful day when he, alongside three others – Abass Oyeniyi, Peter Oloyede, and Prosper Odijeh – fell under the accusatory glare of law enforcement, charged with robbery and conspiracy.

According to his mother, Mrs. Modupe Ajokuji, interviewed by The PUNCH in July 2020, Chidozie innocuously ventured to charge his laptop in his friend’s landlord’s apartment in Abati, Egbeda, when the heavy hand of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) descended upon them.

Despite subsequent revelations by the alleged victim, Mr. Yemi Omodele, absolving Chidozie and Prosper of wrongdoing, the wheels of justice ground inexorably, refusing to heed reason or truth. The demand for a hefty bail of N5 million further compounded their plight, rendering it an insurmountable hurdle for their families.

Mrs. Ajokuji’s anguished recounting underscores the Kafkaesque ordeal endured by her son, unjustly ensnared in a legal quagmire for crimes he did not commit. Despite intermittent glimmers of hope, marked by testimonies absolving Chidozie and Prosper, the wheels of justice have ground to a disheartening halt, leaving their plea for fairness languishing in the abyss of legal bureaucracy.

Hassana Kehinde, co-founder of Ray of Hope Prison Outreach, has tirelessly championed Chidozie’s cause, amplifying his voice in the clamor for justice. Yet, bureaucratic inertia and institutional apathy have perpetuated his plight, relegating his cries for freedom to the periphery of public consciousness.

Despite assurances from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice regarding legal representation and due process, the stark reality remains: Chidozie’s access to justice dwindles with each passing day, shrouding his future in uncertainty.

As recent updates divulge, the wheels of justice have ground to a halt, with the transfer of the Investigating Police Officer to Abuja further exacerbating the protracted legal limbo endured by Chidozie and his co-accused.

In the annals of Chidozie Ajokujie’s harrowing saga, the culprit remains identified, yet justice remains an elusive apparition, tantalizingly out of reach. As he languishes behind bars, his story stands as a poignant testament to the frailties of the legal system and the enduring resilience of the human spirit amidst adversity.
