Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, the lead attorney representing Okuama-Ewu community in Delta State’s N200 billion lawsuit against the Nigerian Army, has posed 17 questions directed at the governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.
In a statement titled “Okuama: Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Management Committee; Before the Jamboree Begins,” released yesterday, Chief Omirhobo raised critical inquiries concerning the situation.
He began by questioning why Governor Oborevwori had not publicly addressed the Nigerian Army’s invasion and subsequent violations of the residents’ fundamental rights in Okuama, which commenced on March 14, 2024. Additionally, he queried why the state government had not initiated an inquiry into the events in Okuama, despite the gravity of the situation.
Chief Omirhobo also questioned the delay in the establishment of an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) management committee, which took over 44 days after the initial incident. He raised concerns about the government’s inability to enter Okuama immediately after the invasion to assess the situation and why the Nigerian Army still had the area cordoned off.
Furthermore, he criticized the government’s lack of response to the residents’ pleas for intervention, the failure to provide essential supplies to those displaced, and the absence of accountability from the Nigerian Army. Chief Omirhobo emphasized the need for justice and transparency, urging the government to address these questions before the IDP management committee becomes a mere spectacle or avenue for financial gain.
The questions raised highlight the urgency of addressing the crisis in Okuama and holding accountable those responsible for the violations endured by its residents. Chief Omirhobo’s statement underscores the importance of transparency, justice, and humanitarian action in resolving the situation.
