IPOB Refutes Allegations Of Involvement In Owerri Jailbreak Incident....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has officially distanced itself from the Nigerian Army’s recent claim linking it to the attack on the Owerri Correctional Center in Imo State on April 5, 2021. In a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, on Friday, IPOB labeled the accusation as “dubious” and characterized it as “media manipulation” orchestrated by the Army.

According to Powerful, “IPOB categorically denies any involvement in the Owerri jailbreak. The security agencies, particularly the army, orchestrated the attack to release criminals who have been destabilizing the Biafran region, particularly Imo State, as a tactic to discredit IPOB.”

The group alleged that the Nigerian security forces were behind the attack. Powerful pointed out the close proximity of the correctional center to various security installations, including police headquarters, the State CID, multiple police stations, the Government House, DSS office, Naval Command, and Military base at Obinze.

IPOB raised questions about the lack of response from nearby security forces during the nearly four-hour-long attack, which transpired without any resistance or casualties. “Where were the surrounding security forces in Owerri when the attack occurred and gunfire was heard?” queried Comrade Powerful. “Who ordered these forces not to intervene during the prolonged assault? How could a jailbreak last four hours without encountering any opposition from the numerous Security Forces in and around Owerri unless it was coordinated by the government itself?”

Furthermore, IPOB accused the Nigerian government of neglecting to investigate the attack for over three years, only recently incorporating the 2021 Owerri jailbreak into its anti-IPOB propaganda efforts in 2024. Powerful emphasized, “The Nigerian Army should uphold the integrity of its institution and focus on addressing the significant security challenges facing Nigeria instead of becoming a tool for government propaganda.
