The annual traditional ‘Oro’ festival, a significant event in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has been scheduled for May 16, 2024, both during the day and at night. The announcement came through a letter from the Ayangburen Palace, signed by Oba Kabiru Shotobi, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu. The letter, dated April 16, 2024, was addressed to the Medical Director of the Ikorodu General Hospital, with the title ‘Notification of Magbo (Oro) Festival 2024.’

In accordance with tradition, the letter advised all females to remain indoors and refrain from venturing out during the Oro festival. The communication also highlighted that organizations falling within the traditional jurisdiction of Oro are expected to comply with these customs.

The Oro festival holds cultural significance in Yoruba tradition, particularly among male descendants. It typically involves daytime processions and distinct sounds across the community, signaling the festival’s observance. According to tradition, the presence of females during the ritual rites of the festival is prohibited.
