Alleged Cement Thief Takes Fatal Plunge Into Lagos Lagoon Amid Pursuit

A man, identified simply as Azeez, reportedly leaped into the lagoon at the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge in Lagos State following allegations of stealing bags of cement.

The incident, which occurred around 10:45 a.m. on Friday, involved Azeez being chased by another individual, leading to his decision to jump into the lagoon.

According to a police source who preferred anonymity, the director of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency operations in Lagos Central received a call regarding the incident. Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered Azeez’s lifeless body in the water.

Paramedics at the scene confirmed his death, revealing that Azeez had been pursued for allegedly stealing bags of cement, prompting his fatal decision.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, stating that the body had been taken to Mainland General Hospital for preservation and autopsy, with investigations underway.

This event echoes a recent case where a woman, Nimotalahi Ishola, jumped into the lagoon while on a ferry in the Alimosho Local Government Area. The police also reported seven drownings in various parts of Lagos State the previous week.

As investigations continue into Azeez’s tragic demise, it serves as another reminder of the complex challenges facing communities in Lagos.
