Iremide had completed assisting his mother at her shop in the vicinity before heading to the hotel to enjoy the pool on Sunday evening, April 28. Regrettably, it marked the final time his family would see him alive.

According to reports from Punch, Kehinde Opeifa, the younger sister of the deceased’s mother, asserted that the hotel made no attempt to offer medical assistance to Iremide before his mother arrived at the scene.

She further alleged the absence of a lifeguard on the hotel premises to ensure the safety of swimmers.

Narrating the events, she stated, “Iremide and his brother were helping their mother in the shop before she left to purchase some items for them in preparation for school resumption on Monday. His brother mentioned he needed to urinate on their way home, and thereafter, he lost sight of him. Subsequently, he returned to the shop.”

“While searching for his brother, a friend informed him they spotted Iremide at Grand Bank Link Hotels. Upon reaching the location, he found Iremide lying motionless on the ground. He immediately rushed home to inform his mother. Upon our arrival, we discovered the lifeless body.”

“No effort was made to transport him to the hospital; he was left lying on the floor. We questioned the individual in charge of the pool regarding why they accepted money from such a young boy and allowed him to access the swimming pool. Consequently, the mother promptly reported the incident to the Police Division at Onipanu Ota and then rushed him to the hospital. Unfortunately, he was turned away from two hospitals. It was at the third hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.”

Another family member, Modupe Babafemi, claimed that the police failed to inspect the boy’s body after the incident was reported at the station.

Babafemi further alleged that the police coerced the deceased’s mother into obtaining an affidavit to refrain from pursuing legal action.

She remarked, “Since we reported the incident to the police, they made no effort to visit the hotel or examine the body. Despite the hospital confirming his demise, which was adjacent to the police station, they did not venture out to check on him. They even advised us to obtain an affidavit to drop the case.
