A commander within the agro-ranger unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, named Mike Ode, fell victim to gunfire from suspected bandits, resulting in his tragic demise. This incident unfolded within Shaapera community, situated in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue state.

According to statements provided to Punch by the deceased’s uncle, Nicholas Ode, the brutal attack occurred on Monday in Shaapera village, Gwer West LGA. Nicholas lamented the loss of his brother, disclosing that the deceased’s body has been transferred to the morgue of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.

Nicholas explained, “Reports indicate he was on a special assignment in Shaapera village, where a clash with herdsmen ensued. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the NSCDC successfully neutralized up to 10 assailants. Unfortunately, among the four civil defence personnel present, my brother was fatally shot while the others managed to escape.”

Superintendent of Corps Mike Ejelikwu, the NSCDC Command Public Relations Officer, confirmed the tragic event, affirming the command’s unwavering commitment to its constitutional duty of safeguarding law-abiding citizens in the state. He clarified that the deceased met his demise during a gun battle with the bandits, with significant casualties on the assailants’ side.

Ejelikwu elaborated, stating, “The NSCDC deploys a specialized team known as the Agro Rangers across various regions, including Gwer West, Logo, Apa, Kwande, and Guma, to ensure the security of agricultural investments. Regrettably, we lost one of our Agro Rangers, who happened to be leadin.
