The Benue State Police Command made a public display of 35 individuals on Tuesday, suspected of various crimes including kidnapping, fraud, cultism, and armed robbery. This disclosure was made by Commissioner of Police Hassan Yabanet during his initial briefing in Makurdi.
Since assuming office in April, Commissioner Yabanet reported that the command has apprehended these suspects for alleged involvement in crimes such as kidnapping, fraud, cult activities, armed robbery, and illegal possession of firearms.
Yabanet emphasized his proactive approach to understanding the security landscape, having toured parts of the state to assess the situation directly. He mentioned implementing reforms that have already shown results, including redeploying officers to optimize their effectiveness and devising strategies to address critical areas requiring police attention.
One notable operation highlighted by Yabanet occurred on May 20, where a police team acted on intelligence regarding a kidnappers’ hideout in Welfare Quarters, Makurdi. Following a confrontation with the kidnappers, three individuals were apprehended, one of whom succumbed to injuries sustained in the exchange of gunfire. Recovered from the scene were weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, POS machines, and ATM cards from various banks.
Furthermore, Yabanet detailed arrests made on May 14, involving suspects engaged in internet fraud. Among items seized were laptops, electronic devices, foreign currency, international passports, and clothing. The suspects confessed to targeting foreign victims and revealed a scheme where they trained others in fraudulent activities, sharing the proceeds.
Additionally, on May 6, police detained individuals responsible for armed robbery along the Makurdi-Naka highway. One suspect was arrested, admitting to involvement in kidnappings for ransom along the same route.
Moreover, a separate arrest operation led to the apprehension of individuals involved in fraud, with items seized including laptops, phones, suspected illicit substances, and military-style attire.
Overall, the Benue State Police Command, under Commissioner Yabanet’s leadership, is actively combating crime through targeted operations and strategic reforms to enhance security across the state.
